NASA’s new SLS rocket lifts Alabama’s rich space heritage
NASA’s Orion spacecraft is on its way to the Moon as part of the Artemis program. Here is what Greg Canfield, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce and Aerospace Alliance Board Member, had to say about the historic launch.
“A few days ago, I had the privilege of watching NASA’s next-generation rocket, Space Launch System, roar into the night sky at Kennedy Space Center on its inaugural mission.
The thrill was magnified for me because I’m acutely aware of the important contributions that Alabama workers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Boeing and many other companies have made to the SLS program.
For that reason, the SLS’s launch was amazing — but not surprising. After all, talented scientists, engineers and technicians helped spearhead development of the Saturn V rocket over a half century ago.
It’s also no surprise that Alabama workers are making key contributions today to put American astronauts on track to return to the Moon and eventually explore even more distant locations.”
